VOYAGE OF VOICES - E STuudio Youth Choir from Tartu and Sydney Philharmonia Choir "Vox" performing together

On the face of it, the tiny Baltic state of Estonia and the vast continent of Australia couldn't be more different, or distant. But there's at least one thing that unites us: the vibrancy of our musical traditions.

E STuudio Youth Choir. E STuudio Youth Choir from Tartu and Sydney Philharmonia Choir "Vox" will be performing together on Saturday 24 February, 5pm Christ Church St Laurence, Sydney Sunday 25 February, 3pm St Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta   Choral singing has woven into the very fabric of Estonian society for centuries – collective singing was a vital form of unified protest against Soviet rule that the Estonian fight for independence of the 1980s is called the 'Singing Revolution'. The Republic of Estonia punches above its weight musically: it's famously the home of 'holy minimalist' icon Arvo Pärt, the high priest of the country's diverse music scene that boasts world-famous conductors and composers. Impressive for a country of 1.3 million. Specialising in contemporary choral music from Estonia and beyond – especially Arvo Part's luminous compositions, and the next generation of Baltic composers – the 44 brilliant choristers of E Stuudio Youth Choir hail from high schools and universities across Estonia, and have already taken their dynamic brand of contemporary acapella singing to Carnegie Hall. In a globe-spanning collaboration, VOX and Estonia's E Stuudio Youth Choir celebrate the rich vocal music of our countries. The young voices of Sydney's VOX choir are a product of Australia's bold musical culture – and its great choral music. VOX performs new Australian music by leading composers such as Ross Edwards, Paul Stanhope and Dan Walker inspired by Australia's unique environment. E Stuudio Choir will showcase the spiritually-inclined music of their homeland. Finally, the two choirs join forces to stunning effect in a meeting of north and south.
