An Incredible Reunion: - Geislingen 1950 – Brisbane 30 March 2014
HARRY LING 23. aprillil 2014
In what is almost a fable from the magical fairy stories of the Brother’s Grimm an amazing encounter occurred in Brisbane on March 30 at the meeting of the Brisbane Eesti Selts. The theme of the day was to share some humour after commemorating the solemnity of the deportations (as per the 25 March remembrance in Estonia).

The contrast and irony of the startling themes couldn't have resounded further and had as much impact as the discovery by Asta Jogever of her old High School classmate Ille Uscinski. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since these two last met whilst attending High School together at Geislingen in Germany (1945-1950). It was certainly fortuitous an occasion and both reminisced and embraced shared memories and experiences. Both enjoyed the opportunity to encounter a kindred soul and to recount the triumphs and travails of the intervening years. They remarked that most of their class mates had passed away and they certainly rejoiced at the startling discovery of a previously unknown "class sister". The twinkle in each other's eyes bought back youthful exuberance and memory. Given the occasion and earlier ceremony one thinks of the sacrifices, hardships and subsequent triumphs of these post war refugees and escapees from the horror of the deportations. Let us forever be mindful of a generation that faced much, saw much and sacrificed even more as "Babylonians in Exile". Congratulations on your reunion after so many years Ille and Asta! It was pleasing to see your sheer delight and to share the radiance of the occasion.
