Living Space exhibition presents works from different generations of women artists living in Estonia and displays a variety of artworks that are diverse in used media - including prints, drawings, installation, video and paintings.
This project was initiated by Katrin Repnau and Bernadette Pilli in an attempt to introduce and enhance contemporary Estonian art in Australia. It aims to improve the links between Australian and Estonian visual art through celebrating free movement of people and the realm of cultural exchange.
Living Space also coincides with the centenary of Estonia's independence. As this important event affects the lives all Estonians all around the world, in Estonia or abroad, it's an excellent opportunity to celebrate contemporary Estonians and their living space in Australia. The arts is one of many platforms by which Estonia's presence can be strengthened internationally as well as a way of promoting vibrant discussions on contemporary culture. The more Estonian culture is fostered, its past and present, the stronger and more vital its profile becomes.
The six exhibiting artists selected by curator Katrin Repnau include distinguished artist Liina Siib, who represented Estonia at the 54th Venice Art Biennale, as well as renowned artists Mall Nukke, Maria Kristiina Ulas and Ulvi Haagensen, and established young artists Britta Benno and Helen Tago. As part of the community engagement programme, four visiting artists will give artist talks and workshops at the Red gallery.
The transport of artwork is financed by the artists and their travel is funded by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. This event has received support and recognition from Ambassador Andres Unga, Melbourne Honorary Consul Lembit Marder and the Estonian Society in Melbourne.
