MELBOURNE’s VÕIDUPÜHA/JAANIPÄEV EVENT

Saturday the 25th June 2016, Estonian Jaanipäev enthusiasts joined their Latvian brothers and sisters at Kilmore, Victoria for the traditional Northern European Summer Solstice bonfire event.

Jaanipäev Kilmores. Not quite the warm summer's day of Northern Europe, but a brisk wintery day for the Southern Hemispheres Winter Solstice. Next day, Sunday 26th June, Melbourne celebrated Võidupüha/Jaanipidu at Estonian House beginning with the traditional welcome speech by M.E.Ü."KODU" Chairman, Sirje Jõgi. Vice Chairman, Rein Valling reiterated the importance of these holidays to Estonia and how these dates are entrenched, not only in Estonian history, but in the heart and soul of the Estonian people. At this time there was a slight change of venue as the combined M.E.Ü."KODU" Committee presented Bruno Metsar with 'A Certificate of Acknowledgement', and a beautiful potted Mini Phalaenopsis Orchid for his 26 years of service to the Estonian Community. Earlier in April 2016, Bruno had resigned from M.E.Ü. "KODU"Committee, although he agreed to stay for an interim period, in an advisory capacity, to ensure a smooth transition from the old era to the new beginning. Then, the proceedings returned to the festive events of the day with the performance of the Melbourne Estonian Ladies Choir and a magnificent display of Estonian folk dancing by Sügislilled and Eiderattad.
