The Global Estonian project founders hope the latter: they want to increase communication between Estonians around the world. And they want to make being Estonian cool. The beta version of the new website went live yesterday.

GlobalEstonian.com (no relation to Viido Polikarpus's defunct magazine of the same name) is a social medium and a mobile application. It lets you: scan news feeds on what ministers' spouses will be wearing to the New Year's ball; set up a windsurfing group; share pictures and poll others on their favorite Vanilla Ninja; write a blog on blood sausage; see who's online to chat with; find out which Estonian business is around and get a map to get there; and perhaps find a place to stay the night.   And the creators say it cost pennies thanks to their own volunteer work and the license-free Drupal software for building websites. As a commercial venture, Global Estonian would have cost 35,000 to 50,000 euros, the makers say. Read more    Global Estonian.
