Consul General's visit to Perth

Triinu Rajasalu, the first career Estonian Consul General to take up a post in Australia had an extremely busy and productive consular mission to Perth.

It has been nearly two years since the last passport mission by the Ambassador, Peeter Miller so Triinu's visit was much anticipated. From the day she arrived she was taking passport applications to the last hour before she flew back to Sydney.   In total, 45 passports applications were taken. Most of those were renewals for Estonian working holiday makers who have no other identity documents. There were all sorts of reasons for needing new passports, some had been lost, others were about to expire and a surprising number had been washed and become unusable. People came from great distances, some flew from Darwin and Kununururra, others drove from all round the state. One boy hitch hiked for 24 hours to get to Perth. Kaarel who flew to Perth said "Kõiks käis lihtsalt ja üllatavalt odav oli uus pass."   Triinu also had meetings with the State Directors of the Departments of Immigration and Foreign Affairs and attended the Chinese National Day Celebrations. Her most enjoyable function was her welcome at the consulate by both long term members of the WA Eesti Selts and the newer younger active Estonians, the age range was from one year to those in their eighties. Harald Pallo and I welcomed Triinu formally and Triinu responded. The fabulous E-crew provided and served a selection of delicious "suupiste" with great enthusiasm. Next morning Triinu enjoyed the cross cultural Australian Estonian experience of vegemite on toasted E-crew made rye bread for breakfast.   It was Triinu's first visit to Perth and we hope it will be the first of many trips to WA and around Australia.Anu van Hattem and Triinu Rajasalu.
